PYC Hosts the Sail n Swim junior regatta July 1-2, 2008Greg Harris7/5/2008 10:39 AM
PYC hosted a Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association (DRYA) junior sailing regatta July 1-2, 2008. We call it the Sail n’ Swim regatta since we have such a great venue for the kids to enjoy two of their favorite summer pastimes. 75 kids ages 8 to 19 years old from Bayview Y.C., Grosse Pointe Y.C., Detroit Y.C., Crescent Sail Y.C., North Star Sail Club, Grosse Pointe Club, and Pontiac Y.C. participated in the Opti Green, Opti Red-White-Blue, Laser Radial, and Laser Full Rig. PYC sent its largest junior race team ever with 18 sailors. Tuesday had typical Cass Lake conditions where the wind velocity and direction were continually changing whereas Wednesday started with a good breeze and built throughout the day. With three race courses running at the same time, considerable effort was required to make this event a success. The good people representing PYC came together to do just that; Hank Callahan directed the visiting clubs as they arrived along with making sure everyone is taken care of, Tom Crosby loaned his power boat for race committee, race committee volunteers were Hank Borchardt, Ed Okorn, Mike Hecker, Jim McCoy, Greg McQueen, Don Rau, Nancy Hess, Allison Harris, Chris Abbott, Paulette Mancuso, Luisa Partipilo, and Eric Ellison; setting marks in support boats were Mark Kramer, Charlie Hess, Alex Fornal, Eric Ellison, and Jack Harris. The junior race team coaches, Jeff LaPalme and Alex Hess, were busy multi-tasking with their primary responsibility of coaching the team but going well beyond the call of duty. Our junior regatta has become one of the favorite on the DRYA circuit. PYC sailors swept the top three places in Opti GREEN fleet: 1st place: Amanda McQueen 2nd place: Sean Stephens 3rd place: Tom Frikker Elise Hess came in 7th place, and Salvatore Mancuso 10th, Evan Dennis 11th, and Alexander Dennis, who only raced the second day, had placed an average of 9th place out of the 4 races he participated PYC had a strong presence in the Red, White, and Blue Opti fleet: Nick Harris jumped from 19th to 8th place overall from day 1 to day 2 (4th in Red), Curtis Rau 10th overall (5th in Red), Josh Abbott 12th overall (6th in red), and Kevin Kramer 13th overall (6th in blue). Radial Laser racers were well represented by Andrew Hess in 5th, Eric Atchison 8th, Julie Okorn 9th and Shayna Simon 10th. Daniel Schuldinger was the only PYC representative in the laser full rig fleet. Other sailors from PYC who had other plans included Jakob Ambros, Benjamin Doozan, and Ryan Clair.

PYC Summer Sailing Camps
by Mark Kramer

All of the recent beautiful spring weather can only mean that summer is right around the corner!  As in past years, Pontiac Yacht Club is again offering several opportunities for youth sailing.  Our program this year is set to be better than ever with new additions to the equipment and staffing, and although registration is already underway, there are still openings for all classes.

This year we have added an additional instructor while keeping the class sizes the same.  This improved instructor to student ratio will offer a better chance for personalized attention so each student will get the most out of his or her sailing opportunity.  We are also planning on bringing in some outside instructors for a series of one day specialized sailing clinics for the more advanced sailors and sailboat racing team members.  As in past years, each one of our instructors is USSA Certified.

In addition to adding 2 new instructor / coaching support boats this year, we have also just purchased 2 Club 420 sailboats for use in this years programs as well.  These are a 2 man crew advanced sailboat which can be configured with a spinnaker and trapeze.  These boats will make a great compliment to the existing collection of boats that the junior program has at its disposal.

This is a terrific program for kids and teens to experience the thrill of sailing and learn the skills needed for them to sail and race sailboats.  To register, click on the link at right.  Last year all classes filled to capacity.  Although we have increased the staff, we have held the pricing and maximum class size from last year, so be sure to register early to get the class that you are looking for.  Please feel free to email if you have any questions.

Thanks again for your past participation in our sailing programs.  We are looking forward to seeing you again this year.
